The Disney Cruise Line’s newest addition, the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure, has been a topic of fascination since its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. However, the ship recently made headlines for an unexpected reason—a minor fire incident that occurred during its Western Caribbean cruise.
On February 9, 2025, while much of the world was focused on the Super Bowl, a passenger aboard the Disney Treasure shared news of a small fire onboard. The incident came just hours after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Cayman Islands, causing concern among passengers and crew.
The Admin of the Disney Cruise Line Community page posted, “Please bear with me on posts. We had a medical emergency onboard in the family, there was a small fire on board, and the earthquake in the Caribbean that people were frantic about. It’s been a long day.”
The fire, which occurred in one of the ship’s incinerator rooms, was quickly extinguished by the crew. A guest onboard shared, “When Captain Andy [McRonald] came on and rattled off the crew warning/instructions, I assumed it was a medical emergency.” However, the announcement was actually a Code Red, indicating a fire.
The cruise director later clarified the situation, explaining that the fire was minor and had been promptly handled. Other passengers lightened the mood with comments like, “A fire in an incinerator sounds like exactly what should be happening,” and “Small fires in the ‘incinerator’ would be, um, a pretty good spot for them.”
Despite the incident, the Disney Treasure continued its voyage without disruption, arriving in Cozumel, Mexico, on February 10 as scheduled. The ship’s itinerary includes stops in George Town, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and the Bahamas before returning to Port Canaveral, Florida, on February 15.
The Caribbean region has been on high alert following the earthquake, with the National Weather Service initially issuing tsunami warnings for the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. Although the warnings were later cleared, the area has experienced several aftershocks, ranging from 2.8 to 3.1 magnitude, off the coast of southern Puerto Rico.
Minor Fires on Cruise Ships: Rare but Manageable
This incident is not the first time a new cruise ship has experienced a minor fire. In June 2024, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, faced a similar issue while docked in Costa Maya, Mexico. The fire briefly knocked out power but was quickly resolved.
A cruise line spokesperson noted that such incidents are “not common, but also not uncommon.” In fact, Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream also dealt with a fire in its incinerator area in November 2024, though that incident required the evacuation of certain onboard areas.
Cruise Ship Safety Measures
Fire safety is a top priority for cruise lines, and all vessels are equipped with comprehensive firefighting systems. These include 24/7 standby firefighting teams, fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and smoke detectors in all staterooms. The swift response to the Disney Treasure fire highlights the effectiveness of these measures.
The Disney Treasure continues to operate smoothly, with no impact on its schedule or passenger experience. As the ship sails through the Caribbean, passengers can rest assured that safety remains a top priority for Disney Cruise Line.
